“Gloam” Short

Beautiful 3D Animation here. I find a lot of 3D really lacks a sense of the organic – nature is rarely well served in with these techniques – but here they’ve done well. There are some small issues, for example when the character holds the tree, there is no friction etc. A character that is big and heavy such as here will have a hard grip on a tree, so you’d expect it to ruffle the bark of the tree etc… that’s where it can be really hard to do nature in 3D packages. That said, however, they’ve done really well here – and the rest of the animation is fantastic (environments, mood, modelling and the observation of the character’s weight etc.) so check it out.

“Collapsing Cooling Towers” Short

Really amusing little short, and a fun example of 3D composited onto a video background. It’s interesting how sometimes just a little animation can be added to a video to change the way you look at something quite mundane or ordinary and give character to an inanimate object.

“Murder” Short Test

A cool little piece of 3D work here, featuring a model, comprised of only spherical shapes, who’s been shot in the head. Emphasis on ‘little’ piece though – it looks just like a test, maybe for something bigger – I’d love to see this character used in a short/music video!

“The External World” by David O’Reilly

Well. You must have been wondering how long I could go without posting this. A true favourite, and one which has garnered quite the cult following for it’s surreal abstract awesomeness. In many ways absolutely nonsensical, and in many others a wholly considered animation piece. Whether you like it or not, you can’t deny it’s compulsive and mind-bending viewing. An insight into the warped genius that is David O’Reilly.

“The Returning Tree” Short

“The Returning Tree”, a Digital Hollywood graduation piece by Yuri Serizawa, is a wonderful example of digital animation with a real organic feel to it. It is elegantly made, subtle, and beautifully lit. A powerful demonstration of what can be done with Maya.

Flogging Molly “Float” Music Video

Made by the inimitable Karni and Saul, this promo is a superlative example of mixed-media filmmaking. The combined use of beautifully shot Live Action environments and a nigh-on perfectly rendered digital character is simply mesmerising. Expect more work from these guys to pop up on Spotter.
